These are some of the questions that came up while we were sharing two stories in our Y4 English classes: “Jack and the Beanstalk” and “The Giant and the Joneses”.
Although we were very sure the beans we were able to get were not “MAGIC” ones, we hydrated them and planted into small pots and were surprised to see that in less than a week they had sprouted and were becoming tiny beanstalks. After a couple of weeks the new shoots were ready to be planted into the soil.
This project is a great opportunity for our fourth graders to stop and think about how the food we eat every day is grown. It will give them the chance to become aware of the hard work it takes to care for plants in order to get fruit and vegetables and how important it is to keep our soil, water and air healthy in order to produce them.
We cannot wait to go back to school and see how tall they have grown!!
