The 2013 Debating year started early, with graduates Andrés Binker-Cosen and Ari Attie-Betesh representing Argentina at the World Schools Debating Championships, which took place in Antalya, Turkey, from the 27th of January to the 5th of February. Their success, both at the national (2012 Senior Acorn Cup) and international levels was soon to be replicated by an up and coming generation of debaters.
Following in the Senior Team’s footsteps, the Junior Debate Team, composed of Alejo Navarro-Goldaraz, Lucas Graciano, Nicolás Ferro, Makena Binker-Cosen and Carlos Von Turkovich, clinched the Debate Group Junior National Championship, in a hard-fought final against Southern Cross.
This accomplishment was accompanied by the selection of Mateo Navarro-Goldaraz and Makena Binker-Cosen to the Argentine National Team, which travelled to Bermuda in order to represent Argentina in the Pan-Americans.
Excellent results towards the end of the year in both Junior and Senior fests (Lucas Graciano 1st, Alejo Navarro-Goldaraz 3rd, respectively), saw both debaters vaulted to the National Team that would be representing Argentina in 2014 Mexico Pan-Americans, and would mark the first instance where four St. Andrew’s Debaters represented Argentina in an international competition at the same time, bringing the total number of SASS representatives for 2013 to six.
These achievements will set the stage for a successful 2014, in which St. Andrew’s will be participating in both the Debate Group and the A.D.A. debating championships, as well as international instances which will see many of our students representing both SASS and Argentina abroad.
