Our senior basketball team was invited to represent Argentina at the 11th edition of the annual Continental Cup, a three sport festival that features participation from over 1000 athletes from the United States and countries all over the world. Our boys’ team, seeking new challenges after winning several tournaments locally, pitted itself against some of the top teams in the US as part of this international Festival whose basketball tournament is organized by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

The team was made up of 5 Year 10 boys and 3 Year 12 boys, thus constituting a good mixture of experienced and upcoming players, with the goal of exposing our younger players to a level of competition that will help them in the future. Under the guidance of coach Santiago Cobiella, they were hosted at Baldwin Wallace University, where they shared a dormitory with athletes from Greece and Kenya.

After arriving in Cleveland, and practicing at the impressive Baldwin University Stadium, they took part in the Opening Festival, were one of the boys recited the athlete’s oath during the opening ceremony, in Spanish, representing all the Spanish-speaking athletes in the festival.

They then subsequently participated for three days in a high-caliber basketball tournament, in which they competed against teams that included players that had already accepted scholarships to Division I universities, and who will, very likely, in the future, be future stars in the sport.

The boys competed to the fullest extent of their possibilities, showing remarkable resiliency in the face of very unfavorable odds, and they learned some very valuable lessons on and off the court. They were outstanding representatives of our school and our country. On top of enjoying a unique sports experience, they were able to learn from the interactions with students their age from different countries and cultures, in what constituted a unique and fantastic trip.
